Theories on Cell Fusion Essay -- Biology Microbiology
Theories on Cell Fusion Endosymbiotic theory commonly asserts that the eukaryotic endomembranes and cytoskeleton originated and formed a type of proto-eukaryotes that started engulfing and using other prokaryotes, thus explaining the presence of bacterial genes in mitochondria. Many scientists are now contesting this idea based on new data. This new data shows that some of the machinery for transcription and translation of DNA may be from archaea, instead of the theory that most or all genetic information came from an engulfed bacterial cell. ââ¬Å"In particular, it is turning out that eukaryotic nuclear genomes carry many genes of bacterial (sometimes à ¡-proteobacterial) origin which have nothing to do with mitochondrial functions.â⬠(2) The tree of life may not necessarily be correct when it shows Eukarya coming off either the bacterial or archaeal branch of the tree. Instead, we are proposing that new theories suggesting genomic fusion may be more accurate. The relationship may have started out through necessity, which lead to increased surface contact and eventual lateral gene transfer. Scientists not only have evidence that this may have happened instead of endosymbiosis, but also reasons why cell fusion may have occurred. Martin and Muller think that the excretion of hydrogen and carbon dioxide by à ¡-proteobaceria benefited methane-producing archaeans that used hydrogen and carbon dioxide as sources of energy and carbon. ââ¬Å"In the absence of an outside source of hydrogen, the Archaean (nominally the host) became dependent on the à ¡-proteobacterium (the symbiont). Selection of host genes produced tighter and tighter physical association and greater surface contact between the two.â⬠(2) Researchers recently used thirt... ...wo prokaryotes. In addition, we are not trying to determine in this short paper whether Archaea or Bacteria evolved first; instead, we are simply stating that the endosymbiosis theory of Lynn Marguiles leaves far too many gaps in the foundation of eukaryotic existence for it too be widely accepted without any further examination. Megabeast Theory
Scientists have discovered the truth behind many mysteries. One of the mysteries yet to be uncovered is the Mega-beasts, the creatures that roamed North America during the Ice Age, 13,000 years ago. An example of Mega-beasts are the Saber-Toothed Tiger,Woolly Mammoth, and Giant Sloth. There are three main theories as to how the Mega-beasts went extinct. They are as follows: 1 . ) The Clovis People killed them all off for food. 2. ) They died due to the sudden climate change. ) A comet wiped them all out. My personal theory is that all three of these factors played a part in the Mega-beast's extinction. If the Clovis People and the climate change together had taken out, say, 59% of the Mega-beast population, and a comet struck the Greenland Ice Sheet, the results could be catastrophic. The entire Mega-beast population could be wiped out entirely, and even if there were survivors, they would be wiped out quickly by the Clovis People and/or the dramatic climate change. There are spikes o fIridium and hexagonal diamonds-which can only be formed by massive impact and incredible heat, hotter than a volcano-in both the layer of ice in the Greenland Ice Sheet that was from the Ice Age and the Black Mat layer in Arizona. The reasons the other theories are incorrect is simple. The Clovis People simply couldn't wipe out all the Mega-beasts on their own. This is correct for climate change as well. Also, there were 35 total species of Mega-beasts. There is no possible way I have heard as of yet that the meteor could have wiped out all the mega-beasts n its own.Ergo, this lead me to the theory that all three are correct and also simultaneously incorrect. They are correct in the sense that they played a part in the mass mega-beast extinction, but they are incorrect in the sense that they didn't ââ¬â couldn't- do it alone. Personally, I think my theory should be researched. One of the ways to do that would be to look further into the mysteries of the Black Mat layer, Greenla nd Ice Sheets, and other areas like that. Surely, there must more clues to be discovered as to what truly killed the Mega-beasts.

Analysis of Andreââ¬â¢s Mother by Terrence McNally Essay
The play, Andreââ¬â¢s Mother, by Terrence McNally is a story about accepting death and is based in a story about a young man who died before telling his mother that he was gay; leaving the manââ¬â¢s partner to break the news and to inform the mother about how much he missed seeing her and his fear of being rejected by her, in the time before his death. The theme of this story is to live life everyday with no regrets. Throughout the symbols and references you begin to understand the life of Andre. The white balloon represents letting go and leaving a young man in peace. The silence of his mother shows that she never accepted his sexual preference. While Hamlet references the struggles of his everyday life. The white balloon in the play Andreââ¬â¢s Mother is a symbol of Andreââ¬â¢s soul. Cal speaks about the white balloons saying, ââ¬Å"They represent the soul. When you let go, it means youââ¬â¢re letting his soul ascend to Heaven, that youââ¬â¢re willing to let go. Breaking the last earthly tiesâ⬠(McNally 737). Andre is saying that the white balloons are Andreââ¬â¢s soul and that when you release them, youââ¬â¢re willing to let go of all the wrong and let him rest in peace. Penny, Calââ¬â¢s sister, and Arthur, Calââ¬â¢s dad let go of the balloon without hesitation. After releasing their balloons Cal reluctantly admits, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not ready yetâ⬠(McNally 737). This is because Cal still couldnââ¬â¢t let go and still had regrets. The balloon being white represents purity. Letting go of the white balloon meant that after all that was said, Andre was now clear and pure again. I believe that white balloon represented letting go of Andre and letting his soul rest in peace with no regrets and nothing left unsaid. Andreââ¬â¢s motherââ¬â¢s silence throughout the play proved to us she did not accept her sonââ¬â¢s homosexuality. Cal tells Andreââ¬â¢s mother how much Andre missed her and longed for her acceptance. He gets finished with his rant and still no response from Andreââ¬â¢s mother. Cal gets mad and replies, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s bullshit. Itââ¬â¢s all bullshit. [Still No response]â⬠Her silence shows that she is not accepting of Andreââ¬â¢s sexual preference. At the end of the play Andreââ¬â¢s mom with her own conflicts releases the balloon. The play write quotes, ââ¬Å"He goes, Andreââ¬â¢s mother stands alone holding her white balloon. Her lips tremble. She looks on the verge of breaking down. She looks at it awhile before she gently kisses it and lets go of the balloonâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I believe at that point that Andreââ¬â¢s mother forgave her son and was willing to wipe the slate clean by releasing the white balloon and letting Andreââ¬â¢s soul rest in peace. Andreââ¬â¢s motherââ¬â¢s silence throughout the play shows that she never accepted her sonââ¬â¢s sexuality. Even though she wasnââ¬â¢t accepting she let her son rest in peace and let his soul ascend to heaven. Andreââ¬â¢s love of theater and the play Hamlet gave us an insight to his life. At the beginning of the play Cal expresses Andreââ¬â¢s love of theatre. Cal expresses, ââ¬Å"God, how much he wanted to play Hamlet again. He would have gone to Timbuktu to have another go at that part. The summer he did in Boston, he was so happy! â⬠(McNally 736). This reference to Hamlet, I believe showcases the struggles Andre went through. Andre struggled with decision-making and avoiding things, as did Hamlet. Hamlet struggled whether to avenge his father and struggled with the decision that he had been avoiding. This is also apparent when Cal brings up Andreââ¬â¢s great performance saying, ââ¬Å"You should have come up the summer he plated Hamlet. He was magnificentâ⬠(McNally 738). I believe the Hamlet reference was to showcase Andre and his internal struggles. McNally uses strong a strong sense of symbolism throughout the story. First by holding a white balloon, the characters were holing a representation of Andreââ¬â¢s life and the memories that they each had of him. By releasing the balloon, they were letting go of the sadness of his death and for some, the secret heââ¬â¢d been keeping from his family. This also represented the crossing over of Andre. In the story, Andre was afraid of being rejected by his mother, whose silence throughout the play proves that she was incapable of offering acceptance to his homosexuality. With Andreââ¬â¢s love of the theater and specifically Hamlet, he is relating himself to one of the most recognized internal struggles of the theater world.

Bsa 375 Week 2 Dq Essay Week 2 DQ DQ1 1.How were the problems with the system missed? Problems were missed by failing to complete the SDLC. The application was developed based on information gathered from agents, but doesnââ¬â¢t seem that it was modified during the system implementation phase. 2.How might these problems have been foreseen and possibly avoided? The problem could have been foreseen and possibly avoided by creating use cases. Use cases will help develop detailed requirements along with expectations, and error handling. 3.In perfect hindsight, the widespread availability of such systems on the internet today, what should the company have done? The company should have taken some time to redesign or retool the application at the first sign of user displeasure. DQ2 1.What is the purpose of developing use cases during systems analysis? How do use cases relate to the requirements stated in the requirements definition? The purpose of developing use cases during system analysis is to help develop the practical requirements, and help understand exceptions, special cases and error handling requirements. Use cases will provide a comprehensive understanding of user interfaces. DQ3 1.A system development project may be approached in one of two ways: as a single, monolithic project in which all requirements are considered at once or as a series of smaller projects focusing on smaller sets of requirements. Which approach seems to be more successful? Why do you suppose that this is true? Be specific. You can answer from your experience or the reading in chapter 3 of this weekââ¬â¢s materials. Movie Witness Written by Mark Book in 1985 Essay
Movie Witness Written by Mark Book in 1985 - Essay Example In this movie, we find two characters Rael and her son Samuel, boarding a train to take them to Baltimore to visit Rachelââ¬â¢s sister. This part has a reflection of family ties exhibited by the Amish community. It shows how the community values keeping close with other family members irrespective of the distance. This is because, despite the many challenges they face and delays of the train, they braved themselves and waited for three hours to ensure that they reach the destination and see their sister. The western culture also values family ties as notes Capsi (72). He notes that mothers liked keeping family members close the same way Rael an Amish woman does. He, however, notes that close family ties are getting cut off. Capsi (76) asserts that some Americans express fear that they would soon lose their family members through family cutoffs. According to western culture, a brother-brother relationship is emphasized for rivalry, jealousy, competitiveness, and ambivalence. Howeve r, this is not the case with the Amish Community. The train is divided into compartments with different rooms for men and women. According to western culture, this is not the case as both men and women are expected to share an apartment. There is no differentiation between men and womenââ¬â¢s apartments. It is in the menââ¬â¢s room that Samuel witnesses the murder of an undercover narcotics. This is followed by the entry of the detectives among them being John Book. The book is seen receiving a phone call which makes Samuel wander about in the room. He wonders because his Amish community is a conservative community and always avoids phone calls (New York Times 72). The movie, therefore, brings about the change in technology, which has become the mode of communication in western culture. Inside the room, there is a newspaper article that talks of McFee, one of the narcotics officers.

The Effects of Sleep on General Fitness Research Paper
The Effects of Sleep on General Fitness - Research Paper Example Moreover, with sleep deprivation over every 24 hours, performance also declines accordingly (Bianchi 2014). Sleep deprivation, thus, directly influences key performance areas, which directly affect one`s body fitness. For this reason, it is essential to understand the sleep patterns and how they may be effected, or how thet may affect other fitness indicators. Researchers managed to conduct a study with data for over 30 years of National Football League and reflected patterns implying that the teams which travelled through three time zones during the night time experienced a disrupted sleeping patterns and disturbed exercise schedules. Thus, it was concluded that such teams were 67% more likely to lose as compared to those with a persistent sleeping patterns. Moreover, studies also demonstrated how athletes getting a good 10 hours of sleep reflect an enhanced muscle memory which directly improves the quality of moves learnt the day before (Calten & Bruce 2009). In addition, similar studies concluded that athletes who consistently get a sleep for 10 hours demonstrated improvement in context to speed, strength, and agility along with the reaction time. Furthermore, sleep deprivation leads towards chronic diseases, that is , those who don`t get enough sleep often exhibit signs of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and other medical disorders re lated to cardio-metabolism and endocrine glands in the human body (Calten & Bruce 2009). More so, further research in the area dictates that even if the body survives a few days with no sleep, it immensely impacts the body`s insulin levels to around 25 percent which leads them towards the pre-diabetic phase, also such individuals may gain around 18 to 30 lb of weight in quite a few days. Studies have also shown that soldiers with less or no sleep at all have also exhibited decreased signs of abilities in marksmanship, mental as well as physical performance

Introduction to Microeconomics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2
Introduction to Microeconomics - Essay Example Figure 1 shows the pattern of farm gate prices: In 2004-2005, UK still remained as the lowest farm gate priced dairy producer for the 7th consecutive year. Comparing prices, the UK has a 37% gap as compared to Italy who receive a milk price of 35.8 euros/100kg compared to UK at 25.9. The reasons that were deemed to have caused this low farm gate price are the industries poor selling systems, bad forward contracts, excess profits up the dairy food chain, too much spring milk and currency effect or the à £ / Euro relationship. However, even with the loss of farmers, the UK milk and dairy industry has grown gradually but steadily since 1998 and the total value of the market increased by 2.9% to à £7.23bn in 2002 (DEFRA, 2006b).Why then in spite of the loss of producers, is the industry thriving? A September 2005 report by the Milk Development Council revealed that there was a discrepancy between the profits received by sectors of the supply chain. That is, some of them are earning excessive profits at the expense of the others. The report showed that supermarket, retail and processor gross margins on dairy products have increased over the past 10 years. Farm gate prices were also higher on average during 2004 as compared to 2003 but this increase was minimal as can be seen by the figure below: The problem now becomes apparent. The farm gate prices being low, it is expected that local and international sales of the product would be high. This is because low production costs usually mean low sales price. However, because of the high margin imposed on the product by businessmen, the products total production costs becomes much larger leading to higher sales price. This translates to lower sales volume because there is an inverse relationship between price and demand. This unfair share of profits and the low farm gate are what caused Scottish dairy farmers to conduct a blockade over the countrys major milk
